The Level 2 Install, Start to Finish

The electrical work is usually half a day. The project is usually two to four weeks. Almost all of the difference is scheduling and paperwork — which means most of it is manageable if you know the order.

People plan this project around the wrong number. They read that the electrical work takes an afternoon, book a Saturday, and are surprised a month later still waiting on an inspection slot. The work is an afternoon. The project is not.

Here is the whole thing in order, with honest durations, so you can start the parts that take longest first.

Stage 1: decide amperage and location (before you call anyone)

These two decisions are yours, they cost nothing, and every subsequent stage depends on them. An electrician cannot quote accurately without knowing whether they are running a 40-amp circuit or a 60-amp one, or how far the conductor travels.

Amperagecomes from three numbers taken in order — your panel’s spare capacity, your car’s onboard charger ceiling and your actual daily mileage — with the smallest of the three winning. That method is in what size charger do I need.

Stage 2: quotes

Three is the useful number, and site visits take scheduling, so start here early. Insist on an itemized breakdown — permit, breaker, conductor and conduit with run length, termination, labor, and any panel work priced separately. Two similar totals can conceal entirely different scopes, and only the line items reveal it.

This is also the stage where a surprise can appear: an electrician looks at the panel and says it will not support the circuit. Before accepting a service-upgrade quote, ask about the alternatives — a lower amperage, a load-managing charger, or freeing capacity elsewhere. If you are chasing a utility rebate, check its conditions now rather than later. Some programs require pre-approval before purchase, and several require a participating installer — both of which are cheap to satisfy in advance and impossible to fix afterwards.

Stage 3: the permit

Your electrician files it, and it is the mechanism that triggers the inspection. Timing varies more than anything else in this project: some jurisdictions issue online the same day, others take a couple of weeks.

The permit is not bureaucratic theater. It is what makes the work provable when you sell the house, when an insurer asks, and when a rebate program wants evidence. Stage 4: install day

For a straightforward job — spare double-pole slot in the panel, reasonable conductor route, wall mount — expect two to six hours. Roughly: shut off and open the panel, install the breaker, run and terminate the conductor, fit the receptacle or hardwire the unit, mount the charger, energize, and commission it.

Have ready: the charger and its manual, clear access to panel and mounting point, the exact position already decided, and the car available. That last one matters more than it sounds — checking the cable actually reaches the port before everything is tightened down takes two minutes and prevents the most annoying possible mistake.

Two conversations worth having on the day. Confirm the amperage settingis configured to match the circuit, not left at the factory default — on many chargers this is a DIP switch or an app setting, and it is what the unit will announce to the car. And ask them to demonstrate a successful charging session before leaving.

Stage 5: inspection

Scheduled by the jurisdiction, so the timing is not yours to control. The inspector checks conductor and breaker sizing against the charger’s rating, GFCI protection where required, grounding and bonding, terminations, the mounting, and that the work matches the permit. When the work is right it is a short visit.

In most areas the circuit is usable in the interim. Confirm that locally rather than assuming, and if a rebate depends on the inspection record, do not file the claim as complete until it is signed off.

Stage 6: paperwork and the money back

Keep the itemized invoice, the permit and the inspection record together in one place. Between them they satisfy nearly every rebate program’s evidence requirement, and they are what a future buyer’s inspector will want to see.

Then file promptly. Utility rebates often have a window measured from the invoice date, and DOE’s catalog lists separate categories for charger purchase and installation rebates — so check whether you can claim both. The two-week head start

If you want this done by a specific date, the sequence to front-load is: decide amperage and location immediately, book site visits in the same week, and ask each electrician what the permit turnaround is in your jurisdiction. Those three moves compress the timeline more than anything else, because the electrical work was never the bottleneck.
