What the NACS cable actually changes
NACS is the SAE J3400connector — the Tesla-derived plug now being adopted across the industry. On a home charger, fitting one changes exactly one thing: the piece you hold. The electricity is identical, the speed is identical, the safety systems are identical. What you gain is that the plug goes into a Tesla’s port directly, with no adapter hanging off the end.
That sounds trivial until you do it every night for five years. An adapter adds an extra joint to the connection, an extra thing to store, and an extra thing to forget in a hotel car park. Plenty of Tesla owners are entirely happy with the adapter and never think about it. Plenty of others find it the single most irritating part of home charging. The honest position is that this is a preference, not a performance difference, and you should decide which camp you are in before paying for it.
The one situation where it is more than a preference is a mixedhousehold in reverse: if every car you own uses NACS and none uses J1772, the native cable removes the adapter permanently rather than just moving it. The Home Flex hardware underneath
Everything else here is the Home Flex, which is the most-recommended home charger in the category for good reasons. The headline is adjustable amperage from 16 to 50 amps, set in the app rather than on a switch or at install. That single feature does more work than any other spec on the sheet:

- It scales later. Upgrade the circuit and raise the setting; the hardware does not change.
- It makes the charger portable between houses.Move, and the new panel’s capacity is a setting rather than a new purchase.
The enclosure is NEMA Type 3Rper UL 50E on ChargePoint’s own datasheet — protection against falling dirt and rain, sleet and snow — with an operating range of -22°F to 122°F. The cable is 23 feet, which is a foot or two shorter than the 25-foot units from Emporia, EVIQO and Wallbox. The app, which is the actual product
You are paying a premium here and it is worth being precise about what for. It is not the metal; several cheaper chargers have tougher enclosures. It is the software. ChargePoint’s app is the most mature in home charging: scheduling that actually holds, reminders when you forget to plug in, session history you can read months later, amperage adjustment, and a public-network map bolted onto the same account.
For a Tesla owner, though, there is a real question here, and we would rather ask it than pretend otherwise: the car already does most of this. Teslas schedule charging natively, report their own energy use, and know their own state of charge — which is information the charger does not have. If you intend to schedule in the car, the app premium buys you energy history and not much else. That is the core of the argument in smart vs dumb chargers, and it is why the no-app Lectron Nexus NACS is a genuinely competitive alternative rather than a downgrade.
Charging speed, worked out
At 50 amps and 240 volts the Home Flex NACS delivers 12 kW. At our standard reference of about 3.5 miles of range per kWh, that is roughly 42 miles of range per hour. Set to 40 amps for a 50-amp circuit it delivers 9.6 kW, about 34 miles per hour. Set to 24 amps for a 30-amp circuit it delivers 5.8 kW, about 20 miles per hour.
Two caveats, both important. First, the circuit: 50 amps needs a 60-amp breakerbecause charging is a continuous load sized at 125%, and that is more than many older panels can spare — check with our panel capacity guide. Second, the car: no wall unit can push more than the vehicle’s own onboard charger accepts, so confirm your model’s maximum AC rate before paying for 50 amps. Who should buy it — and who should skip it
Buy it if your household is all-NACS, you want the adapter out of your life, and you want the best app in home charging on top of it. It is also the right pick if your electrical situation is uncertain or likely to change: nothing else here spans 16 to 50 amps in software, and that range is worth real money when the panel is the variable. The NEMA 3R body, UL/cUL listing, ENERGY STAR and three-year warranty are a solid, unexciting foundation under it.
Skip it if you are happy with an adapter — the J1772 Home Flex is the same charger for less, and works with every car. Skip it if you schedule in the Tesla app and would never open a charger app, because the Lectron Nexus NACS gives you 48 amps and a native plug for meaningfully less. Skip it if your charger will be fully exposed to weather, where a NEMA 4X unit like the Autel MaxiCharger is better armored.
