What “portable” actually buys you
Portability is the feature people underrate and then use constantly. Because the Lectron plugs into a NEMA 14-50 rather than being wired into a wall, three things follow. It needs no electricianif a suitable receptacle already exists — you plug it in and you are charging at 9.6 kW. It comes with you, which matters enormously if you rent, and quietly matters even if you own, because chargers outlive addresses. And it travels: campgrounds, many vacation rentals and plenty of relatives’ workshops have a 14-50 hookup, and this unit turns each of those into a Level 2 charging point.
The cost of that flexibility is a ceiling. Any plug-in charger is capped at 40 amps, because the NEC treats EV charging as a continuous load and limits a device to 80% of the circuit rating — and a 14-50 sits on a 50-amp circuit. Charging speed, worked out
At 40 amps and 240 volts the Lectron delivers 9.6 kW(40 × 240 = 9,600 watts). At our standard reference of about 3.5 miles of range per kWh, that is roughly 34 miles of range per hour.
Put that against real use. The average US driver covers well under 50 miles a day, so an evening plug-in returns a full day’s driving in about ninety minutes and you still have the entire night spare. A 48-amp charger would do it in about seventy-five minutes instead. That six-mile-per-hour difference is what a much more expensive install buys you, and for most single-EV households it is genuinely invisible — the argument we work through in 40 amps vs 48 amps. Where the Lectron’s speed is transformative is against the 120V cable that came with your car: Level 1 adds roughly 3 to 5 miles per hour, so this is close to a tenfold jump. Where the money was saved
Every cheap product cuts something, and a review that doesn’t say what is useless. Here is exactly where the Lectron is thinner than a $450 wall charger.
- Cable length: 16 feet.This is the most consequential one. Rivals give 25 feet, and the difference decides whether you can reach a charge port on the far side of the car, or park in the second bay. - No published outdoor or enclosure rating.Lectron doesn’t publish an IP or NEMA figure for this unit, so we record it as “Not published” rather than guessing. Practically: keep it in a garage or under cover. If it must live outside, buy something with a stated rating — see our outdoor picks.
- Two-year warranty. Most of the competition offers three. On a product you expect to run every night for a decade, that is a real difference in coverage, if a modest one in practice.
- No app on the base model. The WiFi version is a separate SKU. If you are on a time-of-use rate, check that your car can schedule charging before you rely on the charger to do it — almost all can, which is why we don’t treat this as disqualifying.
What it did not cut is the part that matters most: the safety listing. ETL listing to UL 2594 and UL 2231 means a third party assessed it against the standards written for EV supply equipment and personnel protection. That is the line we would not cross for any saving, and the Lectron stays on the right side of it.
The outlet is the real project
If you already have a NEMA 14-50in the garage, this charger costs you nothing but its purchase price and you are done. If you don’t, adding one is the actual job — and it is a proper electrical job: a 50-amp circuit, appropriately sized conductors, and under current code generally GFCI protection on the circuit, usually via a GFCI breaker. One thing not to do: don’t plan to run it from a dryer outlet with an adapter and hope. Dryer receptacles are 30-amp circuits — NEMA 14-30, or the older three-wire 10-30 with no separate ground — and that caps you at 24 amps continuous even in the best case, on a circuit that was never designed for a six-hour continuous load.
Who should buy it — and who should skip it
Buy itif price is the binding constraint, if you rent, or if you want a charger that travels — we rank it against the other travel units in best portable Level 2 chargers. It is the cheapest genuinely-certified way to get real 40-amp Level 2 charging, it needs no electrician when a 14-50 already exists, and the portability is a real feature rather than a marketing word. It is also a sensible second charger for a household that already has a wall unit and wants something for trips.
Skip itif the charger will be permanently mounted on an exposed wall — there is no published weather rating, and that is not a spec to improvise on. Skip it if you need more than 16 feet of reach, which is a more common problem than the price difference suggests; the EVIQO and Emporiaboth give 25 feet. And skip it if you want scheduling and energy data from the charger itself, unless you buy Lectron’s separate WiFi version. For everyone else, it does the one job a charger has to do, at the lowest honest price we can find.
