EV Charger Permits & Inspection
Adding a 240V circuit is permitted work in nearly every US jurisdiction. Here's what the permit covers, what the inspector actually looks at, and why the cheapest version of this job is the one that gets signed off.
Almost every question about EV charger permits is really the same question: can I skip this? The short answer is that a new 240V branch circuit is permitted electrical work in nearly every US jurisdiction, that the permit is a small line on a bill you are already paying, and that the inspection is the only independent check anyone performs on wiring you will run at 40 amps for six hours a night, for years. This page covers what the process involves so it stops being the unknown part of the job.
One scoping note first: the permit is for the circuit, not the charger. Plugging a portable charger into a receptacle that already exists and was already inspected is not new electrical work. Adding a receptacle, adding a breaker, or hardwiring a charger to the panel is.
Why this work is permitted
EV charging is unusual among household loads, and code treats it that way. NEC Article 625 classifies it as a continuous load— current drawn for three hours or more — which means the branch circuit must be sized at 125% of the charger’s current. That is the “80% rule” read from the other direction, and it is why a 40-amp charger needs a 50-amp circuit and a 48-amp charger needs a 60-amp one.
Very little else in a house does this. A dryer runs in cycles; an oven modulates. An EV charger pulls close to its maximum, steadily, in the middle of the night, for hours, unattended, often in an attached garage. Undersized conductors, a loose termination or a missing ground do not announce themselves — they heat up quietly. The permit and inspection exist because that specific combination of high current, long duration and no one watching is exactly where wiring errors turn into fires.
What the inspector actually looks at
Inspections are less mysterious than people expect. For a residential EV charger circuit, an inspector is generally confirming:
- Breaker and conductor sizing.That the circuit is rated for 125% of the charger’s continuous current, and that the conductors match the breaker. Our wire and breaker guide walks that arithmetic.
- Panel capacity.That the service can carry the added continuous load — the calculation covered in our panel capacity guide.
- Wiring method and protection. The right cable or conduit for the location, properly supported and protected where it passes through framing or runs exposed.
- Grounding and bonding. Correct equipment grounding conductor, correctly terminated. This is one of the most consequential items on the list.
- Ground-fault protection where required.Current code generally requires GFCI protection for a 14-50 receptacle circuit, usually via a GFCI breaker. There is a real interaction here worth knowing about: ChargePoint’s own installer notes say an outdoor plug-in install wants an outdoor-rated GFCI breaker upstream, while an external GFCI may conflict with a charger’s internal ground-fault protection on a hardwired install. - A listed charger, installed per its instructions.The unit should carry a UL or ETL listing to the EV supply equipment standard, and be mounted at the height and orientation the manufacturer specifies. Grizzl-E’s manual, for instance, cautions that the enclosure’s water rating can’t be guaranteed if the unit is mounted upside down — exactly the kind of detail an inspector may notice.
- Weatherproofing, outdoors. Enclosures, connections and any receptacle rated and sealed for the location.
How the process usually runs
The sequence is straightforward, and in most cases your electrician handles all of it.
- Scope and quote.The electrician assesses the panel, the run and the charger, and quotes the job. Ask at this stage whether the permit is included — a quote that doesn’t mention one deserves a direct question.
- Permit application. Normally pulled by the licensed contractor. Many jurisdictions handle residential electrical permits online or over the counter.
- The work. Breaker, conductors, receptacle or hardwired connection, charger mounted.
- Inspection.The inspector visits and checks the items above. If something is wrong, you get a correction notice, the electrician fixes it, and it is re-inspected — which is the system working, not a disaster.
- Sign-off. Keep the paperwork. It is the document that answers the question at resale.
On cost and timelinewe won’t publish a national figure, because permit fees and inspection lead times are set locally and vary several-fold between jurisdictions. It is one phone call to your building department to get the real number for your address, and any competent electrician will already know it. Utility notification and rebates
Two adjacent pieces of paperwork worth knowing about, since they often travel with the permit.
Some utilities want to know.A new 60-amp continuous load is meaningful at the transformer level, and some utilities ask to be notified — occasionally as a condition of an EV rate plan. This is usually a form, not an obstacle, and it is how you get access to time-of-use EV rates, which are frequently worth more than the paperwork costs.
Rebates almost always require a permitted install.Utility and state charger rebates typically ask for the permit number, the inspection sign-off, or a licensed contractor’s invoice — the same paperwork that substantiated the federal 30C credit before it ended on June 30, 2026. What skipping it actually costs you
People skip permits to save a fee and a scheduling hassle. Here is the honest ledger on the other side.
At resale.Unpermitted electrical work is the kind of thing a home inspection surfaces, and once it is in a report it becomes a negotiating point — or a requirement to bring the work up to code before closing, at your expense and on someone else’s timeline.
On an insurance claim. After any electrical incident, the origin and the state of nearby wiring get examined. Unpermitted work in the vicinity is an obvious line of inquiry, and not a conversation you want to be having.
On the work itself.This is the one people undervalue. The inspector is the only participant whose sole job is to confirm the installation is safe — not to finish quickly, not to hit a price. A second qualified set of eyes on a 240V circuit that will run unattended overnight for a decade is, in itself, worth the fee.
And on rebates and credits, as above: the paperwork you skipped is frequently the paperwork the incentive program asks for.
Questions to ask before you sign a quote
- Is the permit included in this price, and who pulls it?
- What breaker size and conductor size are you installing, and for what charger amperage?
- Does my panel have capacity for this load, and did you do the calculation?
- How is ground-fault protection handled, given this charger’s own internal protection?
- Who schedules the inspection, and will you attend it?
- Will I get a copy of the permit and the final sign-off?

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit to install an EV charger?
For a new 240V circuit, almost certainly yes. Adding a branch circuit and a breaker is permitted electrical work in nearly every US jurisdiction, whether the charger is hardwired or plugs into a new NEMA 14-50 outlet. Plugging a portable charger into an outlet that already exists and was already inspected is not new work and generally needs nothing. Your local building department is the authority — call and ask before assuming.
Who pulls the permit, me or the electrician?
Normally the licensed electrician, as part of the job — and that is the arrangement you want, because a licensed contractor pulling the permit puts the code compliance on them. Some jurisdictions allow a homeowner permit for work on their own residence. If your quote does not mention a permit, ask explicitly whether one is included before you accept it.
What does the inspector check on an EV charger install?
Broadly: that the breaker and conductors are correctly sized for a continuous load at 125% of the charger's current, that the wiring method and conduit suit the location, that grounding and bonding are correct, that ground-fault protection is present where required, that the charger is a listed device installed per its instructions, and that the panel has capacity for the added load. Outdoors, they will also look at weatherproofing of enclosures and connections.
How much does an EV charger permit cost?
It varies widely by jurisdiction and we won't invent a national figure — permit fees are set locally and can differ several-fold between neighboring towns. What we can say is that it is normally a small fraction of the total install and is usually itemized in an electrician's quote. Call your building department for the actual number; it takes one phone call.
What happens if I skip the permit?
Three things can bite. At resale, unpermitted electrical work can surface in an inspection and become a negotiation point or a required remediation. On an insurance claim after any electrical incident, unpermitted work in the vicinity is an obvious line of inquiry. And you lose the independent check itself — the inspector is the one person in the process whose only job is confirming the work is safe.
Does a permit delay the installation?
Usually modestly. Many jurisdictions issue electrical permits for a residential branch circuit quickly, sometimes over the counter or online, with inspection scheduled after the work. Timelines vary by locality and season, so ask your electrician what the current turnaround is where you live rather than budgeting a guess.
