These two chargers turn up together on nearly every shortlist, and the choice is genuinely close — which is why it gets argued about. The ChargePoint Home Flexis the category’s safe default: the most mature app, amperage adjustable from 16 to 50, and a brand with a decade behind it. The Emporia Level 2 is the value insurgent: 48 amps, ENERGY STAR, a watertight NEMA 4 body and genuinely useful energy monitoring, for meaningfully less money. Here is what actually separates them.

Speed: a difference you will never feel
Start here, because it is the spec people compare first and it decides the least. The Home Flex tops out at 50 amps (12 kW, about 42 miles of range per hour); the Emporia at 48 amps (11.5 kW, about 40). That is a gap of roughly two miles of range per hour. Over an eight-hour overnight charge it amounts to about sixteen miles — on a night when both chargers finished the job hours earlier anyway.
And both numbers assume a 60-amp hardwired circuit. Because the NEC treats EV charging as a continuous load and sizes the circuit at 125% of the current, the Home Flex needs 60 amps for 50, and the Emporia needs 60 for 48. Put either on a more common 50-amp circuit and both run at 40 amps and charge at exactly the same rate. So unless you have a 60-amp circuit, speed is not a differentiator between these two at all. Flexibility: the Home Flex’s real argument
The name is the feature. The Home Flex’s output is adjustable in the app anywhere from 16 to 50 amps, and that range is wider than it sounds. It means one charger works on a modest 20-amp circuit in a rented garage, a 50-amp circuit in your current house, and a 60-amp hardwired circuit in the next one — without buying a second unit or calling anyone back to reconfigure it.
For a household whose electrical situation is settled, that flexibility is worth nothing. For one that isn’t — renting now and buying later, planning a panel upgrade, unsure what the electrician will find — it is the single best reason to pay ChargePoint’s premium. The Emporia adjusts too, and its dual-mode design (hardwired at 48 amps, or 40 on a NEMA 14-50plug) covers the common cases well; it just doesn’t stretch as far down the range.
The apps do different jobs
This is where the two brands reveal their different origins, and it is worth being precise rather than declaring a winner.
ChargePoint’s app is the more mature product.Years of iteration, reliable scheduling, reminders, usage history, and integration with ChargePoint’s public charging network — so one account covers the garage and the road. If you want the app that is least likely to annoy you, this is it.
Emporia’s app is the more informative one for home use. Emporia comes from home energy monitoring, and it shows: the app tracks what each session actually consumed rather than just switching charging on and off. If you are on a time-of-use rate, or you simply want to know what the car is costing you, that data is the more useful thing to have.

Build and reach: the Emporia’s quiet wins
Two specs go the value charger’s way, and neither is trivial.
Cable: 25 feet versus 23. Two feet sounds like nothing until you are measuring the route from a wall-mounted box, down to the floor, along the bay and around the bumper to a charge port on the far side. Enclosure: NEMA 4 versus NEMA 3R.In NEMA’s own definitions, Type 3R protects against falling dirt and against rain, sleet and snow; Type 4 adds windblown dust, splashing water and water directed from a hose. Both are legitimate outdoor ratings for a wall install, but the Emporia’s is the stronger one. So which should you buy?

Which one charges faster, the Home Flex or the Emporia?

Which has the better app?
ChargePoint, on maturity and polish — it has had years more iteration, and it links to the public ChargePoint network. Emporia's app has the more interesting core feature for home use: real energy monitoring that tells you what each session actually consumed, which pairs naturally with the company's home-energy products. Do either of them work with a Tesla?

Which should I buy if I might move house?
The Home Flex has a slight edge, because its 16-50A adjustability means it adapts to whatever circuit the next address offers without a second purchase. The Emporia adapts too, just across a narrower band. Either way, buy the plug-in configuration if portability matters — a hardwired charger is a fixture and stays with the property.
