The enclosure is the product
Charger enclosure ratings get quoted like marketing, so it is worth being precise about what Autel is actually claiming. NEMA’s own published definitions set out the ladder: Type 3R protects against falling dirt and against rain, sleet and snow. Type 4 adds windblown dust, splashing water and water directed from a hose. Type 4X adds corrosion resistance. Most home chargers stop at 3R or 4; the MaxiCharger is one of the few residential units specified at 4X.
That last step is the one that matters if you live somewhere with salt in the air or on the road. Corrosion is a slow failure mode — nothing dramatic happens in year one, and then the fasteners, the enclosure seams and the connector housing start to go. Paying for 4X is paying for years five through ten of an outdoor install, which is exactly the kind of spec that is hard to appreciate at purchase time and obvious in hindsight.
Pair that with the published operating range of about -40°F to 131°F and you have a unit specified for both ends of the American climate map. One caveat we’d repeat from our cold-weather guide: an operating range is the manufacturer’s statement about the equipment, not a guarantee about your specific wall. Mounting under cover, keeping the cable from freezing into the ground, and getting the ground-fault protection right still do more for winter reliability than any single number on a datasheet.
Charging speed, worked out
The arithmetic is the same for any 50-amp charger. At 50 amps and 240 volts the MaxiCharger delivers 12 kW (50 × 240 = 12,000 watts). Using our standard reference of about 3.5 miles of range per kWh, that’s roughly 42 miles of range per hour — the top of residential AC charging. A typical day’s driving of 30 to 60 miles is back in under 90 minutes; even a large battery run genuinely low refills overnight with room to spare.
Two ceilings sit above that number, and both are outside the charger. Your circuit: at 40 amps on a 50-amp circuit the same unit gives about 34 miles per hour, which for most drivers is indistinguishable in practice. And your car: the vehicle’s on-board charger decides how much AC power it will accept, and plenty of EVs cap below 50 amps regardless of what the wall offers. The install: hardwired, on a 60-amp circuit
This is the MaxiCharger’s real cost, and it is not on the price tag. Because EV charging is a continuous load, NEC Article 625 sizes the branch circuit at 125% of the charger’s current — so a full 50 amps needs a 60-amp circuit, hardwired, since no residential plug is rated for that. In practice that means three things: enough spare capacity in your panel to carry a 60-amp continuous load (our panel capacity guide shows you how to check), conductors sized for the run (see wire and breaker sizing), and a permitted, inspected job.
If the load calculation comes back tight, you have options that don’t involve a service upgrade: configure the charger to a lower amperage and run it on a 50-amp circuit, or look at a unit with dynamic load balancing like the Wallbox Pulsar Plus. App, certifications and cable
Autel pairs WiFi and Bluetooth with an app that covers the useful ground: scheduling around cheap overnight rates, remote start and stop, and charging history. It is a capable piece of software, and the Bluetooth link is genuinely useful in a garage where WiFi is marginal — a common failure point for connected chargers that are mounted in exactly the concrete corners where signal dies. It is not as mature as ChargePoint’s ecosystem, which has had years more iteration; if the app is the single most important thing to you, that comparison matters.
On the certification side Autel publishes CSA certification and an ENERGY STAR listing. ENERGY STAR is worth more than it sounds: certified chargers use about 40% less energy in standby than non-certified units, and a charger spends most of its life in standby. Who should buy it — and who should skip it
Buy it if the charger is going somewhere the weather can reach it and stay: a pole or post in an open yard, an exterior wall in a coastal or road-salted area, a carport in a place that gets properly cold. The 4X enclosure and the -40°F published range are the reason to choose this unit over cheaper ones, and if that describes your install, they are worth the money. It also suits a two-EV household or high-mileage driver who wants the full 50 amps and has the panel capacity to support it.
Skip it if the charger lives in a dry garage — you would be paying for corrosion resistance the wall will never test. In that case the Emporia Level 2 gives you 48 amps, a NEMA 4 body and a better-value app, and the ChargePoint Home Flex gives you adjustable amperage and a more mature app for a similar premium. Skip it too if you rent or might move, since it is a hardwired fixture — our renter picks cover that case. And skip it if your panel can’t carry a 60-amp circuit; a 40-amp charger on a 50-amp circuit costs less and charges nearly as fast.
