The specification, and why it's the story
Value chargers usually give something away, and the honest work of a review is finding what. With the EVIQO the surprising answer is: not much on the spec sheet. It carries a full 48 amps, an IP66 / NEMA 4 enclosure, WiFi with scheduling and consumption tracking, and four separate listings — UL, ETL, FCC and ENERGY STAR. Those last ones matter because they are third-party assessments rather than brand claims. UL 2594 is the standard for EV supply equipment; ENERGY STAR certification means the unit uses roughly 40% less energy in standby than a non-certified one, which is where a charger spends most of its life.
The genuinely distinctive spec is reach. A 25-foot charging cable is at the top of the market, and the 40-inch input leadis the part that separates it from other 25-footers: it decouples where the box is mounted from where the conductors terminate. In a real install that is worth more than it sounds — it can mean putting the charger on the convenient wall rather than the wall the conduit reached, and it can shorten the conductor run you pay an electrician for. Charging speed, worked out
At 48 amps and 240 volts the EVIQO delivers 11.5 kW(48 × 240 = 11,520 watts). At our standard reference of about 3.5 miles of range per kWh, that is roughly 40 miles of range per hour. In practice: a typical daily 30 to 60 miles is back in about an hour and a half, and even a large battery run genuinely low fills comfortably overnight.
Two things sit above that ceiling and neither is the charger. Your circuit— on a 50-amp circuit any charger is capped at 40 amps and about 34 miles per hour. And your car, whose on-board charger sets its own maximum AC rate regardless of what the wall offers; we explain that in how Level 2 charging works. Check your vehicle’s maximum before paying for amps it will never draw.
The install: hardwired, 60-amp circuit
This is the 48-amp version, which means hardwired onto a dedicated 60-amp circuit. That follows from the NEC treating EV charging as a continuous load and sizing the circuit at 125% of the charger’s current: 48 × 1.25 = 60. No residential plug is rated for that circuit, which is why every 48-amp charger on the market is hardwired.
Practically, three things to settle before ordering. Does your panel have room for a 60-amp continuous load — run the numbers with our panel capacity guide. How far is the run from panel to charger, since that drives conductor size and a large share of the bill — see wire and breaker sizing. If any of that comes back “no,” EVIQO sells a 40-amp NEMA 14-50 plug-in version of the same charger, which drops the electrician from the equation entirely if you already have a suitable receptacle. That model is one of our picks for renters.
The app, and what “smart” is worth here
The EVIQO app covers the useful ground: remote start and stop, adjustable current, charging reminders, and consumption and cost tracking. EVIQO also makes a point of the WiFi antenna being built for garages and basements, which is a more relevant design decision than it sounds — connected chargers are routinely mounted in exactly the concrete corners where home WiFi is weakest, and a charger that can’t hold a connection is a charger whose app features you never use.
Whether that app justifies anything depends on your electricity rate. If you are on a time-of-use tariff, scheduling into the off-peak window is the single biggest lever on what charging costs you, and energy tracking turns an abstract utility bill into a number you can check. The honest risk: brand track record
We would rather name this plainly than bury it in a pros-and-cons list. EVIQO is a smaller and newer company than ChargePoint, Wallbox or Emporia. The specification is verifiable and the certifications are real third-party listings, so the hardware claim is well-supported. What no datasheet can tell you is whether the app will still be maintained in four years, how a warranty claim goes in year three, or whether replacement parts will be easy to get.
That is the actual trade-off, and it is a reasonable one to accept for a meaningful price difference — particularly since the core function of a charger is electrically simple and the safety listings cover it. But if you want the reassurance of a large company with a decade of iteration behind it, that reassurance costs money and the ChargePoint Home Flex is where you spend it.
Who should buy it — and who should skip it
Buy it if you want a full 48 amps with a genuine app and proper weatherproofing without paying premium-brand prices, and especially if reach is a constraint— a detached garage, an awkward parking position, or a wall where the conduit and the parking spot are not in the same place. The 25-foot cable plus the 40-inch input lead solves problems the other units in this class don’t.
Skip itif you rent or might move, since this version is hardwired — buy the plug-in 40-amp sibling or see our renter picks. Skip it if your panel can’t carry a 60-amp circuit, in which case a 40-amp charger costs less and charges at the same rate on your circuit. Skip it if brand longevity is what you are buying, and pay for ChargePoint or Wallbox instead.
