Hiring an Electrician for an EV Charger
The hardware is the easy part of this project and the smaller part of the bill. Who runs the circuit determines whether you get a clean install at a fair price or a quote with a four-figure surprise buried in it.
Charger hardware is a well-defined market with public specs and visible prices. Electrical labor is neither, which is why the same job can be quoted at $600 and at $2,400 in the same town in the same week — and why the second quote is not automatically a rip-off.
What follows is how to find someone competent, give them what they need to quote accurately, and read what comes back.
Have four facts ready before you call
The quality of a quote depends almost entirely on the quality of the information behind it. Before you contact anyone, know:
- Your main breaker rating— the big switch at the top of the panel, usually 100, 150 or 200 amps. This is the first thing a competent electrician asks.
- The charger, specifically.Make, model, amperage, and whether it is hardwired or plug-in. “A Level 2 charger” is not enough — 40 amps and 48 amps are different circuits and different work.
- The distance from panel to charger, roughly, and whether the route is open basement, finished wall, or outdoors. Conductor cost scales with distance and voltage drop can force a size increase on a long run.
- Whether you are chasing a rebate.Some utility programs require a participating installer or specific paperwork — established before the work, not after. See utility rebates.

Where to find someone who has done this
Your utility.The best first call, and the one people skip. Utilities running charger rebate programs often maintain lists of participating installers, and using one can be a condition of the rebate. DOE’s catalog currently lists 114 utilities offering residential Level 2 purchase rebates and 74 offering installation rebates — a decent chance yours is among them.
The charger manufacturer.Several run installer networks or referral programs. The value is not the referral itself but that these electricians have seen that specific unit’s manual before.
Neighbors with EVs. Unfashionable and effective. You get a real price for a genuinely comparable house, which is the one comparison a national average cannot give you.
The five questions
Ask these on the first call. You are not testing their integrity — you are testing whether they have done this job before.
1. “Will you do a load calculation?”The right answer is yes, and a good electrician will already be asking about your panel. EV charging is a continuous load under the NEC and the circuit is sized at 125% of the charger’s current, so the calculation is not optional paperwork — it determines whether the install is legal.
2. “Do you pull the permit, or do I?” You want them to. An electrician who suggests skipping the permit is telling you something important about how they work, and about what happens when you sell the house or claim on insurance.
3. “What happens if my panel cannot support it?”The revealing question. A generalist says “then you need a service upgrade.” A specialist lists the alternatives first: dial the charger down, use a load-management feature, share an existing circuit with a switching device, or add a subpanel. 4. “What route will the conductor take, and what size?” Someone who has walked the job answers specifically. Long runs may need a larger conductor for voltage drop, and that is a cost you want identified before the invoice, not on it.
5. “Is this a fixed price or an estimate?” Both are legitimate. What is not legitimate is finding out afterwards which one it was.
Four answers that should end the conversation
- “You don’t need a permit for this.” Not their call, and usually wrong.
- “I can quote it over the phone.” Without seeing the panel, the number is a guess that will be revised on the day.
- “We’ll just put it on the dryer circuit.”EV charging is a continuous load and needs a dedicated circuit. Sharing is possible, but only with proper load management hardware — not by splicing.
- “Cash, no paperwork, cheaper.” Which also means no permit, no inspection, no rebate, and nothing to show a future buyer.
Reading the quotes
Get three, and compare them line by line rather than by total. A quote worth trusting breaks out: permit fee, breaker, conductor and conduit with the run length, receptacle or hardwire termination, labor hours, and any panel work separately.
When totals differ wildly, look for the scope difference — it is nearly always there. The classic pattern is one electrician quoting a straightforward circuit and another quoting the same circuit plus the subpanel they think it needs. Those are different jobs, and the cheaper quote is not necessarily the better deal if the second one is right.
Two smaller things worth confirming in writing. Who is present for the inspection, and who fixes anything it flags. And whether the quote includes mounting the charger itself or only bringing power to the wall — a genuine ambiguity, and a common source of a small extra bill.
What to have ready on the day

Frequently asked questions
Do I really need a licensed electrician for an EV charger?
For the circuit, in almost every jurisdiction yes — this is a 240-volt dedicated circuit that requires a permit and an inspection. Some homeowners are permitted to do their own work under an owner permit, but that varies locally and it interacts badly with rebates, insurance and eventually your home sale. The one job that genuinely can be DIY is plugging a plug-in charger into an outlet that already exists.
How do I find an electrician who has installed EV chargers before?
Three sources are more reliable than a search: your electric utility, which often maintains a list of participating installers for its rebate program; the charger manufacturer, several of which run installer networks; and neighbors who already have one. Experience shows up in the quote — someone who does these regularly will ask about your main breaker rating within the first minute.
What should an EV charger installation quote include?
An itemized list: the permit fee, the breaker, the conductor and any conduit with the run length stated, the receptacle or hardwire termination, labor hours, and anything the panel needs. It should also say explicitly whether it is a fixed price or an estimate, and what happens if opening the panel reveals a problem.
Why do two quotes for the same job differ so much?
Usually because they are not the same job. A short run from a panel with a spare double-pole slot is a fundamentally different piece of work from a forty-foot run in conduit into a panel that needs a subpanel first. Price differences of that size are almost always scope differences, which is why itemization matters more than the total.
Should the electrician supply the charger?
Not necessarily, and buying the hardware yourself is usually cheaper and gives you a free choice of model. What matters is that the electrician sees the exact model's installation manual before quoting, because amperage, hardwire versus plug, and the mounting pattern all affect the work.
What if they say I need a panel upgrade?
Get the load calculation in writing and treat it as the start of a conversation rather than a verdict. A load-managing charger, a lower amperage setting or a circuit-sharing device can sometimes avoid the upgrade entirely — and a good electrician will raise those options unprompted. If none of them applies, the upgrade is real.
