The 48-amp class has quietly become a software market. Almost every charger that delivers a full 11.5 kW now arrives with a WiFi radio, a cloud account and an app you are expected to keep signed into. The Lectron Nexus 48A is the J1772 answer for people who want the amps and none of that: the same 48 amps at 240 volts, hardwired, in an IP66 housing, with a 23-foot cable and a wall-mount J-hook and plug holder in the box.

What makes it worth a review rather than a footnote is the paperwork. Lectron lists the Nexus to UL 2594, UL 2231 and UL 2251 assessed by ETL, plus FCC and ENERGY STAR — a more complete set than several better-known offline chargers publish. Below is the full spec picture, our own charging arithmetic, the one figure Lectron does not publish, and an honest read on who should skip it.

What you get for the money

The Nexus is a 48-amp, 11.5 kW, hardwire-only unit with a J1772 connector — the coupler every non-Tesla EV in North America uses for AC charging, and the one a Tesla accepts through the adapter it shipped with. That places it in the fastest class of home charging you can practically install, which we take apart in 40 amps vs 48 amps.

The enclosure is rated IP66. In the IEC’s two-digit code, the first 6 means dust-tight and the second means protected against powerful water jets — a genuinely outdoor-capable rating for a wall unit, though not a corrosion specification the way NEMA 4X is. The cable is where Lectron spends its detail. It is 23 feet of 15.0 mm (±0.3 mm) heavy-duty compound, and Lectron states it is engineered to stay flexible and easy to wrap around the wall mount even in freezing weather. That is a claim worth having in writing, because a cable that goes rigid at -15°F is the single most common practical complaint about charging through a real winter — the charger keeps working; the cable turns into a garden hose left out overnight. The wall-mount J-hook and plug holder that make a cable that length manageable are included rather than sold separately.

The listings, and why they matter on a smaller brand

Lectron is not a household name, so the certifications carry more weight here than they would on a ChargePoint. The Nexus is ETL listed to UL 2594, UL 2231 and UL 2251, plus FCC and ENERGY STAR.

Those three UL standards are not interchangeable and it is worth knowing what each one covers. UL 2594 is the standard for the electric vehicle supply equipment itself. UL 2231 covers personnel protection systems — the ground-fault protection that stops the charger being dangerous when something goes wrong. UL 2251 covers the plug, receptacle and coupler. A charger listed to all three has had the box, the protection and the thing you hold assessed, which is the complete set. ENERGY STAR is the efficiency half: certified chargers use markedly less power sitting idle, which matters because a home charger spends most of its life doing exactly that.

Worth noting for anyone chasing an incentive: a utility rebate more often requires ENERGY STAR certification than it requires connectivity, so an offline charger is frequently still eligible. Check the specific program before you buy — our utility rebate guide covers how to find out.

Charging speed, worked out

At 48 amps and 240 volts the Nexus delivers 11.5 kW (48 × 240 = 11,520 watts). Using our standard reference of about 3.5 miles of range per kWh, that is roughly 40 miles of range per hour. An average day’s driving is back in well under an hour; an almost-empty battery refills comfortably overnight.

Lectron quotes 46 miles per hour for the same unit. That is not a contradiction — it is a different efficiency assumption, and it is the reason we publish ours in the open rather than repeating a marketing figure. Run the number for your own car if you want the real answer: kilowatts divided by your miles-per-kWh gives miles per hour.

The more important caveat is the one no charger can fix. The wall unit offers power; the car decides how much to take, and a great many EVs cap their onboard AC charger at 32 or 40 amps. The install: hardwired, and a 60-amp circuit

There is no plug-in version and there cannot be one. Under the NEC, EV charging is a continuous load, so the circuit is sized at 125% of the charger’s current: 48 amps needs a 60-amp circuit, and no residential receptacle is rated for that. Lectron is explicit that the Nexus requires a permanent hardwired installation by a licensed electrician on a dedicated 240V circuit.

Practically, that means three things before you order. Confirm the panel can carry another 60 amps with our panel capacity guide — this is the step that most often changes the answer. A hardwired charger is also a fixture, which means it stays with the house.

The gap in the spec sheet

One figure is missing, and we are not going to paper over it: Lectron publishes no operating-temperature range for the Nexus. The product page covers the enclosure, the cable compound, the certifications and the install, and says the unit is built for rain, snow, heat and dust — but never states a low or high temperature limit.

So our spec table records that as “Not published”, and this charger stays off our cold-weather roundup, where every entry is ranked on a figure its maker actually states. If your winters are genuinely severe, buy from the makers who commit to a number in writing — Grizzl-E publishes -22°F to 122°F, and Autel publishes roughly -40°F. For a garage install, or a wall in a temperate climate, the absence is a documentation gap rather than a red flag; the cold-flexible cable claim suggests Lectron has thought about winter even if it has not put a number to it.

No app — what it actually costs you

Three things are genuinely lost with an offline charger, and only one of them is hard to replace.

  • Scheduling: replaceable. Nearly every modern EV can set a departure time and an off-peak charging window from the car’s own app, and that schedule follows the car to every charger it plugs into. If you are on a time-of-use rate, this is where you should be setting it anyway.
  • Energy history: not replaceable. The car reports what it received; a metered charger reports what came through the wall, and the two differ by charging losses of roughly 10%. If you want to verify what a session actually cost rather than estimate it, buy a connected charger — the Emporia Level 2 is the value pick for exactly this.   • Remote lockout and managed charging: situational. Lockout matters if the charger lives somewhere strangers can reach it. Utility managed-charging programs need a networked charger and sometimes pay real money — check whether yours offers one before you commit to an offline unit.

Against that, the offline column: nothing to sign into, no firmware update that changes behavior, no cloud service that has to keep existing for a fifteen-year fixture, and no WiFi dropout in a concrete garage. We argue the whole trade properly in smart vs dumb chargers.

Who should buy it — and who should skip it

Buy it if you own the wall, can get a 60-amp circuit, drive a J1772 car (or a Tesla with its adapter), and actively do not want your charger on your home network. It is the most thoroughly certified offline 48-amp charger we have found currently listed, the IP66 body handles an outdoor mount, and the cable is both long and specified for cold. If you were shopping for the Grizzl-E Ultimate 48A before it was discontinued, this is the charger that now fills that brief.

Skip it if you want scheduling or per-session energy data from the charger itself — buy the Emporia Level 2 or the EVIQO 48A, which add WiFi and, in the EVIQO’s case, the longest reach in the class. Skip it if you need a published low-temperature rating for a severely cold, exposed install. Skip it if you rent or might move, because a hardwired fixture stays with the house — our renter picks cover that case. And skip it if your panel can only spare a 50-amp circuit: you would be paying for 48 amps you cannot use, and a 40-amp charger would charge your car at exactly the same rate for less.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Lectron Nexus 48A have WiFi or an app?

No, and that is the design. Lectron's own product page and FAQ for this model describe the hardware, the enclosure, the cable and the certifications, and never mention WiFi, an account or a mobile app. So there is no scheduling and no per-session energy history from the charger itself — you schedule in the car, which nearly every modern EV can do, and which works at every charger you ever plug into rather than only this one.

What circuit does the Lectron Nexus 48A need?

A dedicated 60-amp circuit, hardwired. EV charging is a continuous load, so the NEC sizes the circuit at 125% of the charger's current — 48 amps × 1.25 = 60. No residential plug is rated for a 60-amp circuit, which is why every 48-amp charger on the market is hardwired. Lectron is explicit that installation is a licensed-electrician job on a dedicated 240V circuit.

How fast does the Lectron Nexus 48A charge?

At its full 48 amps and 240 volts it delivers 11.5 kW. At our standard reference of about 3.5 miles of range per kWh, that is roughly 40 miles of range per hour. Lectron markets the same unit as 46 miles per hour, which assumes a more efficient car than our reference; we publish our own arithmetic and the assumption behind it so you can re-run it for your vehicle. Either way, your real figure depends on your car's efficiency and its maximum AC charge rate — plenty of EVs cap below 48 amps.

Can the Lectron Nexus 48A be installed outdoors?

Yes. It carries an IP66 rating, which in the IEC code means dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets — a proper outdoor-capable specification for a wall-mounted unit. Lectron states it is built for indoor and outdoor use in rain, snow, heat and dust. What Lectron does not publish is an operating-temperature range, so if you are installing somewhere that sees genuinely extreme cold, a charger with a stated low-temperature figure is the safer specification.

Is the cable long enough?

At 23 feet it is at the longer end of the market, but two feet shorter than the 25-foot units several rivals ship. Measure the run from the wall position to your car's charge port with the car parked as it actually parks — including the loop the cable needs to hang without strain — before you decide. Lectron includes the wall-mount J-hook and plug holder, which is what keeps a cable that length off the floor.

Is the Lectron Nexus 48A a good replacement for the Grizzl-E Ultimate 48A?

It is the closest current equivalent, which is why it now holds that slot on our lists. Both are 48-amp, hardwire-only, J1772 chargers with no app, in a weather-sealed body with a cable the maker says is built for cold weather. The Lectron adds ENERGY STAR and the full UL 2594/2231/2251 ETL listing, which Grizzl-E never published for the Ultimate. It gives up two feet of cable, the cast-aluminum enclosure, and the published -22F operating range — Lectron states no temperature figure at all.
