The plug is the product
EVIQO sells this unit and its hardwired sibling as effectively the same charger with a different tail, and that is a fair description. The specification that changes everything is the NEMA 14-50 plug, and it changes three things at once:
- The install.With a suitable receptacle already present, mounting this charger is a homeowner job. Without one, you still need an electrician — but you need them for a receptacle, not for a hardwired termination inside a manufacturer-specific enclosure.
- The ceiling.A NEMA 14-50 sits on a 50-amp circuit, and the continuous-load rule caps a 50-amp circuit at 40 amps of charging. That is why no plug-in charger delivers 48 amps — it is a code constraint, not a manufacturer’s choice.
- The ownership. A plug-in charger is portable property. It comes off the wall, goes in a box, and moves house with you. A hardwired charger is a fixture and generally stays.

Reach: the spec EVIQO actually wins on
The reason we rate EVIQO above several better-known brands has nothing to do with amps. It is 25 feet of charging cable plus a 40-inch input lead, which is the longest combined span in this class. The input cable is the underrated half: it means the charger body does not have to be mounted directly at the receptacle, so you can put the box where it is convenient to reach the car and still plug into an outlet three feet away.
In a two-bay garage, or where the receptacle is in an awkward corner because that is where the panel happened to be, that flexibility is worth more than eight amps ever will be. The 6-to-40-amp range, and why it matters more than it sounds
EVIQO publishes an app-adjustable output from 6 to 40 amps. Most chargers bottom out at 16. That low floor turns this unit into a solution for two situations most reviews never mention:
A circuit smaller than 50 amps.Under the NEC’s continuous-load rule you take the breaker rating and multiply by 0.8: a 40-amp circuit supports 32 amps, a 30-amp circuit supports 24, a 20-amp circuit supports 16. A charger that can be set that low can live on circuits a fixed 40-amp unit cannot legally use. A car that cannot use 40 amps. Plug-in hybrids in particular have much smaller onboard chargers, and there is no point installing capacity the vehicle will never draw. Setting the charger to match the car lets you install a smaller, cheaper circuit deliberately rather than by accident. Our PHEV roundup works that through.
Build, weather and certifications
The enclosure is published as IP66 / NEMA 4. Reading that precisely: under IEC 60529 a first numeral of 6 means dust-tight and a second numeral of 6 means protected against powerful water jets, while NEMA Type 4 covers windblown dust, splashing water and hose-directed water. Both are strong ratings for a wall-mounted charger, and either would be sufficient for a sheltered outdoor install.
One caveat we always flag on plug-in units going outdoors: the charger’s own rating does not extend to the receptacle it plugs into. An outdoor 14-50 needs a weatherproof in-use enclosure and correctly specified ground-fault protection upstream, and getting that wrong is the most common cause of the nuisance tripping we cover in why chargers trip GFCI breakers.
On paperwork, EVIQO publishes UL, ETL, FCC and ENERGY STARlistings and a three-year standard warranty. Charging speed, worked out
At 40 amps and 240 volts this unit delivers 9.6 kW. At our standard reference of about 3.5 miles of range per kWh, that is roughly 34 miles of range per hour— about 340 miles across a ten-hour night. The hardwired 48-amp version delivers 11.5 kW, or about 40 miles per hour.
The step between them is six miles of range per hour. If you drive 40 miles a day, the 40-amp unit replaces that in about 70 minutes and the 48-amp unit in about 60. Both finish long before you wake up. The 48-amp version earns its keep for drivers covering serious daily distance, households sharing one charger between two cars, or anyone who genuinely needs a fast mid-day top-up — the case is made in 40 amps vs 48 amps.
Who should buy it — and who should skip it
Buy itif there is already a NEMA 14-50 receptacle in your garage, or if adding one is cheaper for you than a hardwired run. Buy it if you rent, or expect to move, and want a charger that comes with you. Buy it if your panel is tight and the 6–40 amp range is the thing that makes a charger fit at all. And buy it if cable reach is your binding constraint, because nothing else at this price gets a 25-foot cable and a 40-inch input lead into the same box.
Skip itif you want the maximum speed a home circuit can deliver — that is the hardwired EVIQO 48A or another 48-amp unit on a 60-amp circuit. Skip it if you want the most polished app and the deepest support organization, where ChargePoint is still ahead. And skip it if you want the toughest possible enclosure for a fully exposed wall, where the NEMA 4X Autel MaxiCharger is better armored. For most homes with an existing outlet, though, this is the charger that gets you 90% of the result for a fraction of the installation.
