The connector is the whole argument
NACS — standardized as SAE J3400— is the connector Tesla developed and the rest of the industry has been adopting since the 2025 transition. J1772, standardized as SAE J1772, is what every other North American EV has used for AC charging. At home the two are functionally equivalent: the same 240V AC arrives at the car either way, and the adapter in your frunk bridges them losslessly.
So the honest case for a native NACS charger is ergonomic, not electrical. No adapter to unclip in the rain. No adapter left plugged into the public charger you used on Saturday. No adapter that the other driver in the household took. If you have ever walked back into the house at 11pm to find the adapter, you know the size of the annoyance — small, but nightly. The mirror-image risk is the one to think hardest about. A NACS cable is awkward for a J1772 car — it needs a NACS-to-J1772 adapter, which is exactly the problem this charger exists to remove. In a single-Tesla household that is irrelevant. In a household that has, or might get, a non-NACS second EV, a J1772 wall unit plus the adapter is genuinely the more flexible purchase.
Charging speed, worked out
At 48 amps and 240 volts the Nexus delivers 11.5 kW(48 × 240 = 11,520 watts). At our standard reference of about 3.5 miles of range per kWh, that is roughly 40 miles of range per hour— and this is one of the cases where the wall unit and the car line up neatly, because most Teslas accept a maximum of 48 amps on AC. You are buying exactly the ceiling the car can use, with nothing wasted in either direction.
That is the tidiest version of a point we make constantly: the charger offers power and the car decides what to take. Build, listings and the install
The Nexus carries an IP66rating, which in the IEC code means dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets — a proper outdoor-capable specification for a wall-mounted unit, though not a corrosion rating like NEMA 4X. The cable is 23 feet, at the longer end of the market though a couple of feet shorter than the 25-foot units, and a holster is included.
The listings are the part worth dwelling on given the brand is not a household name: UL 2594 / 2231 / 2251 assessed by ETL, plus FCC and ENERGY STAR. UL 2594 is the EV supply equipment standard, 2231 covers personnel protection systems, and 2251 covers the connector itself — which for a NACS cable is exactly the certification you want to see, since the coupler is the newest part of the assembly. ENERGY STAR certification means roughly 40% lower standby energy use than a non-certified unit.
On installation, it is hardwired, because 48 amps means a 60-amp circuitunder the NEC’s 125% continuous-load rule and no residential plug is rated for that. No app — how much does it actually cost you?
On a J1772 charger, we treat a missing app as a real deduction. On a NACS charger aimed at Tesla owners, it is closer to a rounding error, and it is worth being specific about why.
Scheduling is already handled.A Tesla lets you set a departure time, a charge limit and off-peak scheduling in the car’s own app — and that scheduling follows the car to every charger it ever plugs into, not just this one. Arguably the vehicle is the right place for it, since it knows the state of charge and the departure time.
What you genuinely lose is metering.There is no per-session kilowatt-hour or cost readout from the charger. Who should buy it — and who should skip it
Buy it if you drive a Tesla or another NACS-equipped EV, you own the wall, and you want the adapter out of your life. It matches the 48-amp ceiling most Teslas accept, the safety listings are thorough and specifically cover the connector, and the IP66 body handles an outdoor install. It is a straightforward, well-specified charger whose one distinguishing feature is the thing you actually touch every night.
