J1772: the long-time standard

J1772 — its full name is SAE J1772 — is the rounded connector that’s been the standard for AC Level 1 and Level 2 charging in North America for years. If you drive almost any non-Tesla EV, this is the port on your car and the plug on the end of most home chargers. It handles both the 120V Level 1 trickle and 240V Level 2 charging through the same connector, which is why so much home charging equipment is built around it.

The direction of travel is clear: over time more new cars will arrive with a NACS port instead of J1772, and more chargers will offer a NACS handle.   • NACS charger + non-Tesla EV: works with an inexpensive NACS-to-J1772 adapter, letting a NACS charger feed a car that has a J1772 port.
  • Matching plug + matching car:no adapter needed — the handle goes straight into the port.

Adapters are cheap and widely available, so at home the connector question is really a conveniencechoice, not a compatibility wall. The main downside of relying on an adapter is one extra step each time you plug in, plus a piece to keep track of. If you can buy the charger whose plug matches your car directly, you skip that small hassle — but you are never truly locked out either way.
