Level 1: the cord in the trunk

Every EV comes with a Level 1 charging cable. One end plugs into an ordinary 120-volt household outlet — the same kind you charge a phone from — and the other into the car. There is nothing to install, nothing to buy, and it works anywhere there’s a grounded outlet. The catch is power. A standard outlet on a shared 15-amp circuit realistically delivers around 12 amps continuously, which works out to about 1.4 kilowatts. That is enough to add roughly 3 to 5 miles of range per hour.

For a plug-in hybrid with a small battery, or a driver who only covers a handful of miles a day, that trickle is genuinely fine — plug in each night and you’re always topped up. For a full battery-electric car it’s usually too slow. Twelve hours parked overnight replaces only about 40 to 50 miles, so if you drive more than that between charges, the battery slowly drains over the week. Level 2: the home charger

Level 2 runs on a 240-volt circuit — the same voltage that feeds your electric dryer, oven, or water heater. The numbers above aren’t magic — they come straight from watts and a car’s efficiency. Power in kilowatts is just volts multiplied by amps, divided by 1,000. To turn kilowatts into miles per hour, we assume a typical EV travels about 3.5 miles per kilowatt-hour, a reasonable middle-of-the-road efficiency for a mainstream electric car. For most full-EV owners, the verdict is Level 2 at home. It’s fast enough to refill overnight regardless of how far you drove that day, it’s gentle on the battery, and once it’s installed you stop thinking about charging altogether.
