Every EV charger falls into one of three types, and the difference between them is simply how much power they push. More power means more miles of range added per hour. Once you see the three side by side, the whole thing stops being confusing — and it’s obvious which one you want at home.

Level 1: the cord in the trunk
Every EV comes with a Level 1 cable that plugs into an ordinary 120-volt household outlet. It works anywhere, needs no installation, and adds about 3 to 5 miles of range per hour. That’s fine as an emergency backup or for a plug-in hybrid with a tiny battery, but for a full EV it’s slow — an overnight charge might only replace 40 miles. Most owners quickly outgrow it.
Level 2: the home charger
This is what this whole site is about. A Level 2 charger runs on a 240-volt circuit — the same supply as your electric dryer or oven — and that doubled voltage (plus more amps) is why it charges four to ten times faster than Level 1, adding roughly 25 to 40+ miles of range per hour depending on amperage. DC fast charging: the road-trip type
DC fast chargers are the high-power public stations you use on a long drive — they can add 100 to 200+ miles in half an hour on a capable car. They skip the car’s onboard AC converter and feed DC power straight to the battery, which is why they’re so fast. They’re also expensive commercial equipment you don’t install at home, and leaning on them daily is harder on the battery than gentle overnight Level 2 charging. Think of DC fast as the type for the highway, not the garage.
So which do you need?
For home, Level 2, without much debate. It’s fast enough to refill overnight, gentle on the battery, and affordable to install. Keep the Level 1 cord in the trunk as a backup, use public DC fast charging on road trips, and let a Level 2 charger handle the daily 80%+ of your charging at home. The only real question left is which Level 2 charger — and that comes down to your car’s connector and your panel’s capacity.
